There’s no shortage of content online. Businesses are publishing blog posts, social media updates, videos and emails every day.
But publishing content doesn’t automatically make it worth reading.
Good content gives someone a reason to stop, pay attention and keep going. It answers a question, solves a problem or gives them something they can actually use.
So what makes content worth reading? Start with these three things.
1. It gives people something they actually want
The best content usually starts with a simple question: What does my audience want to know?
That might be a question your customers ask all the time, a problem they’re trying to solve or something they don’t fully understand about your industry.
For example, a landscaping company could write about how often a lawn should be treated. A law firm could explain what someone should do after a car accident. A marketing agency could break down how much a small business should realistically spend on advertising.
These topics work because they’re useful.
Instead of creating content because you feel like you need to post something, start with the questions your customers are already asking. That makes it much easier to create content people actually want to read.
2. It gets to the point
People are busy. They don’t want to work through five paragraphs before finding the answer they came for.
That doesn’t mean every piece of content needs to be short. It means it needs to be clear.
Use straightforward language. Break up long sections. Lead with the information that matters most. If you’re answering a specific question, answer it early.
This is also important for search.
Content that clearly answers a question is easier for people to scan and easier for search engines and AI-powered search tools to understand. If someone searches for “how much does a website cost?” they don’t want a vague introduction about the importance of having an online presence. They want an answer.
Be useful first. Be clever second.
3. It sounds like a real person wrote it
People can tell when content feels generic.
If every business in your industry could publish the same article with its name swapped out, it probably isn’t doing much to set you apart.
Your experience is what makes your content more interesting.
Share an opinion. Give a real example. Explain how you approach a problem. Talk about a mistake you commonly see customers make. Add insight that someone couldn’t get from reading five other websites.
This is where businesses have an advantage: you already know your industry.
Your marketing should show it.
Good content has a purpose
Before publishing your next blog, social post or email, ask yourself:
Would my audience actually find this useful?
If the answer is yes, you’re on the right track.
Content doesn’t need to be groundbreaking to be effective. It needs to be relevant, clear and genuinely helpful. When you consistently give people information they can use, you have a much better chance of earning their attention, and eventually their business.
At Tribal Media, we believe the best content starts with understanding the people you’re trying to reach. From there, it’s about creating something worth their time.
